Go Into Yourself: The Deeper Meaning of Lech Lecha

הפצת המיינות חוצה | June 27, 2025

This week’s Parsha starts with the Possuk: וַיֹּאמֶר ה׳ אֶל אַבְרָם לֶךְ לְךָ מֵאַרְצְךָ וּמִמּוֹלַדְתְךָ וּמִבֵית אָבִיךָ אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶר אַרְאֶךָ — “And HaShem said to Avrom; Go forth from your land and from your birthplace and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you.” RaShi quotes the words of the Possuk לְךָ לֶךְ and says: “For your benefit and for your good”.

There is a well-known question on this statement: Why did HaKodosh Boruch Hu need to tell Avrom to Go forth for his own benefit and for his own good? Why did just instructing him to go forth [without assurances] not suffice?

The Tzemach Tzedek brings in a Maamor (which was found in one of the booklets that recently came out of exile and captivity) that the holy Alshich writes; לְךָ לֶךְ means ‘go into yourself’. This means that Avrohom should reach into himself for the root and source of his Neshomoh as it is above.

Because it is known that it is not the entire Neshomoh which descends below and pervades the physical body—it is only a ray of the Neshomoh. The main part of the Neshomoh remains above because regarding holiness it is impossible that everything is drawn below without a trace above, because anything which is holy cannot be completely uprooted from its place, and regarding the Neshomoh the main root remains above in the upper ‘Eretz’, which is called ‘Eretz Cheifetz’, and only a ray comes off the Neshomoh and descends to pervade a physical body.

In order to reach the root of the Neshomoh, this is specifically achieved by going to ‘Eretz Yisroel’ which parallels the upper ‘Eretz’.

This is the meaning of the words לְךָ לֶךְ (‘go into yourself’) אֶל הָאָרֶץ because being outside Eretz Yisroel he [Avrohom] was separated from the main part and root of his Neshomoh and only by going to Eretz Yisroel is he able to connect to himself and his root.

This means that the main part and root of the Neshomoh is as it is above in the world of unity, or in the terminology of the Kabbalah the world of Atzilus.

As the Tzemach Tzedek adds in a side note that even though most Neshomos are only from the [lower] spiritual worlds of ‘Beriyah’, ‘Yetzirah’, and ‘Assiyah’, nevertheless, the [upper] spiritual world of Atzilus is the root of all Neshomos as is also explained in Likkutei Torah regarding the Possuk שְחוֹרָה אֲנִי וְנָאוָה — “I am black but comely”.

So, in order to reach the root and source of the Neshomoh as it is in the spiritual world of Atzilus it is achieved as a result of going to Eretz Yisroel.
