As Long As I Have Hashem

זכרו תורת משה | June 27, 2025

R’ Arieh Schechter was involved in many conversion processes. When questioning them, he observed how there was a wide range of answers given. Each one has a different story about why and how they wanted to become a ger. There were some who he could tell from their response that their neshamah stood at Har Sinai, while others don’t give off that impression.

One time, present at the Beis Din of R’ Nissim Korelitz, there was a lady tentatively becoming a giyores. Right before she was ready to convert, after learning all the halochos, R’ Nissim asked her: “If you won’t be able to marry the boy you’re thinking of marrying once you become a giyores, are still committing to observe Torah and mitzvos?”

“After I come close to Hashem,” she shouted, “and start keeping his mitzvos, I’ll ready forgo a million desired boys, but I will not to give up on Hashem. That is what I truly desire, and there’s no way I’ll forsake Him for anything else in the world.” (Arieh Sha’ag, Chanukah, p. 25)
