A Question to Give You Something to Think About

למודי משה | February 13, 2026

Reuven dressed up on Purim as one of the gedolei hador, and went to visit a certain wealthy person living in Yerushalayim to bring him an honorable mishlo’ach manos. Reuven was good at imitating voices, and he managed to trick the wealthy individual into thinking that he was actually that particular gadol. The wealthy person thinking the gadol had come to visit him, had a neighbor who was a professional photographer, and he paid him 1000 shekel to come round and take pictures of the gadol giving him and his children a berachah. Additionally, most people who knocked at this wealthy person’s door received 100 shekel, however, the “gadol hador” received 4000 shekel for his causes. After Purim the wealthy Yid realized what happened and he demanded that Reuven pay him back 1000 shekel for the photographer, and 4000 for the generous donation which he got tricked into giving.

If this shailah came to your Beis Din, what would you say? (For a Teshuvah about this see Mishpatei HaTorah, Vol. 1, siman 18)
