And his master will bring him... And his master will bore a hole in his ear with a drill and he will serve him forever. (21:6)
The Chidushei Harim asks: If someone sells himself as a slave because he can’t afford to feed himself, why is he punished by having a hole cut into his ear?
He answers that if this person had annulled himself to Hashem, He would have become his owner. If that would have been the case, Hashem would have been responsible to feed him and his family, and He would have done so in an honorable way. He only reached this situation because he did not annul himself to Hashem.
