The Torah warns a judge, "Midvar sheker tirchak" -- never tell a lie.
But it's not only a mitzvah for a judge -- everyone must always tell the truth. So if you climb up to reach the cookie jar and accidentally knock it over and it breaks - and your mother sees the mess and asks you if you might have had something to do with it - don't just shrug your shoulders and say, "Who, me?"
Instead, tell your mom what really happened, and she'll probably smile and say, "Thanks for telling the truth. Next time, ask me to get a cookie for you, OK?" And that will be the end of that! - And you get a Mitzvah too!
