There are those who always give precedence to themselves and always put themselves first. The בני גרשון were different, though - they put others ahead of themselves. They were גם הם. It is for this reason that they were worthy of being elevated - זכו לנשיאת ראש.

Everyone who comes to join the legion to perform work Tzovoh is a Ratzon in the language of the Gemoroh. That means, even he who wants to want, וועלין וועלין that he wills that it should be to him a Ratzon (yearning).

It is important for one to remember that his only true possessions are his good deeds, as the verse says: “His sanctified things belong to him”. Everything else is passing.

Story of the Chasam Sofer
Once after the Yom Tov of Shavuos, the Chasam Sofer ZY”A met a Talmud (student) of his Yeshiva in Pressburg, who had become a son-in-law at a resident of the town of Ropshitz. He asked him how he is doing in Ropshitz. The Talmud answered, that on Shavuos morning by Ahava Rabboh “Mehn hoht gedrapet oif der glatter venter far tzvei sho’oh – We climbed on the flat walls for two hours”, out of great Deveikus & Hislahavus (Devotion & Enthusiasm).
One may ask, a story as such should have been mentioned before Shavuos. To which we can say, as we capsulize the Yom Tov of Shavuos, we must realize that every day must be a fresh Kabolas HaTorah, as Rashi says on the Possuk of Bachodesh HaShlishi. (Shemos 19:1)
