The Family and Teachings of the Baal Shem Tov

Pardes Yehuda | June 27, 2025

When the hailiger Baal Shem Tov was niftar, he left with us his son Reb Tzvi. Reb Tzvi was niftar in the year תק"מ (1780). Reb Tzvi left behind three choshuver sons, tzaddikim: Harav Hakadosh Reb Aharon Titover, Harav Hakadosh Reb Yisroel (Shosek) of Povlitch, and Harav Hakadosh Reb Dov Ber of Olinov.

The Baal Shem left behind a daughter too, the tzadaikess Udel, about whom he said “her neshomoh was from the אוצר הנשמות הטהור (the pure treasury of neshomos).” He said that her name, אדל, was roshei teivos אש דת למו, “a fiery Law for them” (Devorim 33:2).

From אדל was born Harav Hakadosh Reb Moshe Chayim Efrayim of Sadilkov, the Degel Machane Efrayim, and the Rebbe Reb Boruch of Mezhibuzh, who continued the derech of his grandfather the Baal Shem Tov.

From the Baal Shem Tov came many different branches and generations of chassidim. The Rebbe zol zein gezunt is the ninth generation from the Baal Shem Tov, from the Rebbetzin of the Rebbe Reb Yochonon, the Rebbe zichroinoi livrochoh. She was a granddaughter of the Savraner Rebbe, who was a grandson of Harav Hakadosh Reb Tzvi, son of the Baal Shem Tov.

The teachings of the Baal Shem Tov are spread throughout all chassidisher seforim from the talmidim of the Baal Shem Tov. כל מה שתלמיד ותיק עתיד לחדש, everything that any true talmid teaches in Toras Chassidus comes from the koiach of the Baal Shem Tov, which stretches out from his day until today, and will continue until ביאת גואל צדק, the coming of Moshiach.
