Believe in the King

Believe in the King

On Rosh Hashanah, we stand before our King. We believe that He is the Melech, and this emunah itself has an amazing power.

We can learn a lesson in emunah from the weasel.

Said R. Ami: Come and see how great it is to have emunah. From where do we see this? From the weasel and the pit. If it is so with someone who places his emunah in a weasel and a pit, someone who places his emunah in Hakadosh Baruch Hu — how much more so!

Rashi there explains what this is all about:

There is a story in the Aggadah about a young man who said to a young woman that he would marry her, and promised her so, in all emunah. She said, “Who will be the witnesses [that you so promised me in all emunah]?” There was a pit there, and a weasel, and the young man said: “The pit and the weasel are witnesses for this.”

Some time passed by, and he broke his emunah. He married a different woman, and fathered two children from her. One of them fell into a pit and died, and the other was bitten by a weasel and died.

The idea expressed here is that the young man placed faith in a weasel and a pit, and even though it is implausible to put one’s faith in such things, the weasel and the pit nevertheless turned out to be very trustworthy, and even caused his children’s demise. From this we learn the power of placing faith. Surely if a person will place his faith in Hashem, our King, He will prove worthy of the person’s faith.
