“נרדה ונבלה שם שפתם אשר לא ישמעו איש שפת רעהו הבה” – “Come, let us descend and there confuse their language there, that they should not understand one another’s language.” There were seventy languages in the world prior to the story of the Dor Haflagah. When the Posuk says that Hashem confused the languages of the world, it means that Hakodosh Boruch Hu caused each nation to forget the other 69 languages that it knew, other than its own, so that the nations no longer understood one another.
