We are currently in a situation similar to the one which the bochurim in Yeshivas Slabodka were in 84 years ago. Towards the beginning of the Holocaust, the Germans started to attack Poland and nearby places, however, in Kovna, things were still running as normal. At the time, R’ Avrohom Grodinski, one of the main talmidim of the Saba of Slabodka got up to give a shmooze, and he said the following:
We are gathered here together at this serious time, a time of war and a time of peace. War is happening in the nearby towns, and in our town, there is peace. Both the war and peace obligate us to do teshuva. The war, as we are scared about getting punished, and the peace because of hakoras hatov [gratitude].
