The Torah speaks about four sons

MAOR CENTRE publications | June 27, 2025

Why was the passage about the four sons placed towards the beginning of the Haggadah, when seemingly it is more related to the story of Yetzias Mitzraim that comes later?

The four sons represent four categories of those who learn Torah. The Chochom is someone who learns Torah Lishma with the main objective being to discover the truth. The Rasha represents someone who learns Torah in a way that justifies what he does with conclusions that are not according to Halacha.

So, the reason that this passage is put at the beginning is because it is really related to the study of Torah and our attitude to learning Torah the whole year round. But since this night we are discussing Pesach, we explain these categories in relation to questions about Pesach.
