In the 3,000 years since we became a nation, countless Yidden have faced the real-life application of bechol nafshecha. Greeks, Romans, Christians, Muslims—all have tried to force us to accept their religions, and almost always, we have said NO!

When we say the words bechol nafshecha, we should picture ourselves in this position, chas v’shalom—tied to the stake, or held at gunpoint, or in some other danger to our lives. Will you give up Yiddishkeit for something else? they ask, and we must be ready to say go ahead—light the fire! Shoot!
