HaKadosh Baruch Hu Is Not Limited

Often, a person despairs of his aspirations—and it is very painful. Why does he give up on his aspirations? He concludes as follows, “Let’s think practically... after all, what can I realistically achieve?” He doesn’t believe that he can get very far. His mistake lies in the fact that he believes that he must work within the parameters of nature. He neglects to understand that the aspect of ליטהר הבא is indeed our domain... but the אותו מסעיין is the domain of the Ribbono shel Olam, Who is unlimited: He opens the Heavens and pours forth a tremendous shefah to anyone who takes that first step of ליטהר בא.

When we approach a multimillionaire for a small donation, we are embarrassing him, for this person, when he gives, he gives according to his standards. Here too, HaKadosh Baruch Hu gives us in a manner that only He can. Believe in this. Soon it will be Rosh Hashanah, and we will plead for great things. We will ask for Torah, we will ask for ...אלוקים קרבת for lofty and holy matters. When a person remembers and recognizes what a miracle it is to receive these this holiness, his attitude and outlook change entirely.

It is true that a person must search internally to discover what his first step will be... his ליטהר בא. This is crucial. But, as it relates to the tefillah for greatness, the attitude of vulnerability and inadequacy matters a great deal. For if a person davens to Hashem, but he believes first in himself... if he davens to Hashem and he is halfway in despair... this is not davening, and it is not bitachon. Because he doesn’t see how the miracle will happen, he thinks that it can’t happen. His outlook must change. And we must be relentless in davening to Hashem for our spirituality. Tzaddikim teach us that when it comes to Hashem, we must pester and badger Him. We must come, day after day, and ask for our ruchniyus. This is something to which we must become accustomed. When a person falls into a quandary regarding material matters, such as health or financial issues, R”l, we daven really hard. If only we would recognize that the primary reason HaKadosh Baruch Hu granted us the ability to daven to Him is for spiritual matters...to ask for the siyatta diShmaya in returning to Him.
