Paid on Time

The Way of Emunah | April 17, 2026

There once were several Jewish workers doing some work in Rav Shaya’s home. According to their estimation, the job would be finished at 6pm, and Rav Shaya gave his word that he would pay them as soon as the job was done. He prepared the money and put it aside to use for the payment.

In the meantime, a poor widow came and asked for some charity. Rav Shaya felt very bad for her and he gave her the bundle of money he had prepared for the workers. He had bitachon that Hashem would send him the money to pay them by the time they finished the job.

At 5pm, he still didn’t have the money, and he was very concerned about the possibility of transgressing the prohibition of not paying a worker on the day he completes a job. He walked into the bais medrash and paced back and forth while he davened to Hashem for the money. He spoke to Him like a son speaking to a father, and he said, “Ribono Shel Olam, You know that I don’t want to transgress the prohibition of not paying a worker on time. So, what should I do? I don’t have the money. Please give it to me!”

Suddenly, a man entered the bais medrash and began to converse with him. Rav Shaya walked with him until the amud at the front of the shul and, after speaking with him for a few minutes, the man took out some money from his pocket and handed it to him. When Rav Shaya counted it, he saw that it was exactly the amount he needed to pay the workers.
