Shema and the Exodus

Living Moshiach | January 09, 2026

We fulfill the commandment to remember the Exodus from Egypt every day when we say Shema. The third paragraph of the Shema prayer mentions that G-d took us out of Egypt. The Hebrew word for Egypt also means limitations. When we say Shema, accepting the yoke of the kingship of G-d upon us, we free ourselves from the limitations of the body, and this is an “exodus from Egypt”. This is why Shema is a fitting time to mention the Exodus from Egypt.
