Respect and Approach in Torah

Ba'er Heitev | June 27, 2025

ותקרבון אלי כלכם All of you approached me - all of you: in a confusion. But further on (Devorim 5:20, 21) it states, “That you - all of the heads of your tribes and your elders - approached me, They said, Behold [the Eternal our G-D] has shown us [His glory and His greatness]’’: That approach to me was a fitting one - young people showing respect to their elders, letting these precede them, and the elders showing respect to the heads of the tribes that these should precede them. Here, however, you approached me, all of you, in a confusion, the young pushing aside their elders, the elders pushing aside the heads (Sifri Devorim 20:1). Rashi (1:22)

From this we must learn the difference between a positive approach or unfortunately a negative approach. As it says in Meforshim and Seforim HaKedoshim “Kol Neichoh Misitroh DiKedushoh – all tranquil is from the characteristic of Holiness”, “Kol Rugzoh Misitroh DiMisavoh – all upheaval is from the portion of impure” (Sefer Chareidim, Perek 21). The difference of an action and situation can simply be the way and approach in which it is done.
