One Point from Likkutei Sichos Chelek 24 Shicha 1 for Tu B'Av

IN THE PARSHA:
In this week’s פרשה we learn about the מצוה of appointing a ______, and the מצוות that apply to the king himself.

QUESTION:

Since it is a מצוה in the תורה, why was Hashem upset when בני ישראל asked שמואל הנביא to appoint a king?
And, if it there was something wrong with their request, why did Hashem _______ it to them?

ANSWER:

As Yidden, we have Hashem as our ultimate king, and the fear of Hashem alone should make us live our lives the way we are supposed to.
Ideally, when we live our life properly, the role of a Jewish king is to inspire and raise the people to a deeper level of ______ ______ and a stronger commitment to fulfill Hashem’s will.

However, when the Yidden asked for a king, they were not on that level.
They wanted to have a king to function like the other nations, one that would ensure that they lived a basic, civil life – the kind of life that we, as Yidden, should be able to do on our own, with Hashem as our king.
This is why Hashem was upset with their request.
Still, Hashem told שמואל הנביא to appoint a king. Because although they ________ have been able to life that life on their own, and have their king bring them to a _______ level of serving Hashem, they were not on that level at that time, so they needed a king to help them.

LIFE LESSON:

Although, nowadays, we don’t have a king in the literal sense, we each must appoint someone to help guide us in doing the right thing, by fulfilling the instruction of ___ ךָה ל שע .

Further discussion:

What if someone says that they cannot find someone to be their “רב”?
