During the Nine Days, we refrain from:
- Buying new clothing or shoes, even if they will not be worn until after Tisha B’Av.
- Washing clothing, even if they will not be worn until after Tisha B’Av. Children’s clothing that get soiled often may be washed.
- Wearing newly washed clothing. Therefore, before the Nine Days begin, wear for a short time all shirts and pants or dresses and skirts you plan on wearing throughout the Nine Days. If you were unable to do so, place the garment on the floor for a short time before wearing it.
- Showering for pleasure. You may, however, shower for health reasons, for a mitzvah, or if you are uncomfortable due to heat or sweat. If you go to the mikvah every day, you may do so during the Nine Days as well.
- Eating meat or drinking wine, except at a seudas mitzvah.
The Rebbe urged for siyumim to be made on each of the Nine Days, and that they be attended by as many people as possible.
