This week, the Torah warns us against engaging in various forms of prognostication. Instead of using superstition and fortune-telling to divine the future, we should instead focus on remaining wholesome with Hashem. (Devarim 18:13)
Why would someone wish to know the future? In order to protect himself against a loss that might occur. He can ostensibly make changes now that would prevent the eventuality from happening.
Nevertheless, we are told to trust in Hashem and take what He sends our way with acceptance and love. The idea of being tamim, whole, refers to our faith.
However, there is another way to look at it as well. Explains the Ohr HaChaim, the goal of telling the future was to minimize one’s loss somehow. However, if one is steadfast with Hashem, he will remain WHOLE, and not suffer any losses at all.
That’s because what Hashem sends us is the best thing for us, and what we consider a loss is actually a gain. By trying to ward it off, we’re actually causing ourselves to lose!
Therefore, we ought to work on trusting in Hashem and joyously accepting what He sends our way. Through that, we will remain whole, and remain WITH Hashem.
