The Avodah of Bittul

Havineini | June 27, 2025

We see an incredible thing related to bittul and da’as. In truth, the sifrei kabbalah and pnimiyus are filled with explanations for the mitzvos, sheimos and gematriyos—all of which have the potential to give us a deeper understanding of Yiddishkeit. And the tzaddikim of the generations were well-versed in these sefarim, as is clearly evident from the sefarim that they authored. And yet, what did they demand from their talmidim and chassidim? How did they seek to infuse in them the great madreigos that they drew from the kisvei Arizal? By demanding bittul and avodah!

Sometimes, a person will ask, “What’s the secret? Which sefarim must I learn in order to attain lofty levels in avodas Hashem?” The answer is that there is no such secret. There is no sefer that will make a person into a ba’al madreigah. Indeed, the sefer was written with ruach hakodesh, and it has the ability to assist a person who learns in it. But the only way that a person will become truly elevated is by doing the avodah of bittul.

You have a great thirst, and you want to satisfy it. The only way is through bittul to HaKadosh Baruch Hu.
