During the days of Selichos, a Yid came to Rav Shaya and related that he had owned a tavern for many years, from which he made a decent livelihood. Recently, a non-Jew who had a vendetta against him opened a competing tavern, which was taking away his business.
Rav Shaya asked what the gentile’s name was, and the Yid replied, “Mario.”
At that moment, a Machzor was sitting in front of Rav Shaya, as he was getting ready for the davening of Rosh Hashanah. He opened the Machzor and pointed to one of the piyyutim. He said, “Look what it says here. ‘L’hachris kol mario.’ (To cut down all who seek to do you harm.) This means that Mario will be cut down!”
And so it was. A short time later, this gentile got into an argument with one of his friends. The friend took out a knife and stabbed him, and this rasha was cut down.
