3 Iyar 5685 – The Yahrzeit of Rav Yeshaya ben Rav Moshe of Kerestir Zy”a
One Friday during the winter, the Bodrog River froze, making it impossible to catch fish for Shabbos. There also was no fish available from neighboring towns. As Shabbos approached, Rav Shaya was told about the problem. He sent a message to the workers in the kitchen to fill a pot with water, onions and spices and to put it on the fire, and Hashem would send the fish.
And so it was. A short while before Shabbos, a non-Jew suddenly appeared holding a large fish. They purchased the fish from him, quickly cleaned it, and dumped it into the pot of boiling water.
A few minutes later, Rav Shaya entered the kitchen and said, “It’s almost Shabbos. You must take the pot off the fire now.”
Since the fish had only been on the fire for a few minutes, the workers thought it surely would still be mostly raw. They were amazed when it was served on Shabbos, and it was fully cooked!
Many guests came for that Shabbos. Rav Shaya gave them each a portion of fish at all three meals, and there was enough for everyone.
