On the Parsha

("And Hashem spoke to Moshe saying: This shall be the law of the leper on the day of his purification, and he will be brought before the kohen.")

Asks the Ohr haChaim haKadosh: Isn't this second possuk (verse) entirely unnecessary? It should just say "When the metzora becomes pure, he shall be brought to the kohen." What is all this "This is the law of the metzora on the day of his purification..." coming to teach us?

Says the Ohr haChaim: there are actually two types of tzara'as (leprosy): 1) "natural", and 2) tzara'as of our parsha of a sinner. Being the case, a person with tzara'as could deny the whole incident, and say that his is just "natural," with nothing to do with Hashem at all. And therefore, says the Ohr haChaim, we send him out of the camp to be alone, with torn clothing and grown-out hair, which are all things that should make a "natural" tzara'as much worse, since he is now "alone and depressed" (he must not have any "Novardok Weeklies" out there...), which is actually a cause of "natural" tzara'as, as the Ohr haChaim brings down.

Now what happens? The metzora hopefully realizes that the whole exterior black and cruel looking world is fake, and reconnects with the inner truth that everything is so perfect, gevaldig, and amazing, thanks to his loving caring Father in Heaven Hashem, and, before he knows it, becomes clean as a whistle! A miracle!

And that is what the possuk is coming to teach us: specifically on yom taharaso, the day of his purification, does it become clear that toras hametzora, his tzara'as, was not some random "natural" occurrence, but rather a direct message straight from Hashem Himself: Open up that Sha'ar haBechina of the sefer Chovos haLevavos, and recognize how the entire creation is pure goodness, with nothing bad and negative at all!
