Providing the Wine

One of the regular guests in Kerestir was a man who greatly enjoyed drinking wine. Occasionally, he would become intoxicated. Therefore, Rav Shaya’s household members would hide the wine from him so that he shouldn’t drink too much.

Since Rav Shaya knew how much he liked to drink, he would sometimes tell him, “Please go down to the basement and bring me a bottle of wine.” He would then have the opportunity to drink as much as he liked while he was in the basement.
