The Chofetz Chaim zt”l would travel from place to place to sell his sefarim. Since he was usually unfamiliar with the streets of the towns he came to, he would hire a local bochur to act as his guide.

In one city, he was walking around the streets with the bochur he had hired. As they walked, they came to the home of one of the wealthy residents of the city, and the bochur said, “A rich man lives here but it isn’t worthwhile to go to him because he is very stingy and he won’t buy anything.”

As soon as the bochur said this, the Chofetz Chaim took out his wallet and gave him all of the money he had agreed to pay for his services for the full day. He pushed the money into his hands and would not agree to remain in his company for another moment.
