Thanking Hashem for Suffering

The Way of Emunah | April 17, 2026

וּבָא אֲשֶׁר לוֹ הַבַּיִת וְהִגִּיד לַכֹּהֵן וגו' כְּנֶגַע נִרְ אָה לִי בַּבָּיִת (יד, לה)

And the one who owns the house will come and he will tell the kohen... something like a negah appeared to me in my house. (14:35)

Why does it say that “something like a nega appeared to me”, rather than simply saying “I saw a nega”?

The Alshich Hakadosh writes that this is meant to teach us the importance of accepting that everything that occurs comes directly from Hashem. Since any form of suffering is sent by Him to atone for our sins, we should thank and praise Him for these challenges. With this in mind, he translates the words “k’nega nirah li b’bayis” to mean “a nega appeared in the house because of me.” In other words, one should express his belief that the nega was sent by Hashem as a result of his sins..
