Breaking the Heart With Joy

Rashi states: “Crushed for lighting, and not crushed for Menachos.” Rav Moshe of Kobrin zy”a (quoted in Sefer Imros Moshe) explains that every Jew must crush and break his heart before Hashem. However, this should only be done “for lighting”. It should only be done in a joyful, illuminated way. It should not be “for Menachos”, meaning that one should not crush himself in a way that leaves him sitting (munach) in sadness and depression.
