Sefer Niflaim Maasecha (Chelek 1, page 20) relates the following story that he heard from the Paya Rov hy”d:
The Sanzer Rov zy”a was once sitting, surrounded by chassidim, when he declared, “A Jew must have money. A lot of money!”
He continued, “Without money, one cannot fulfill any mitzvos, as the Gemara says (Nazir 2:2): ‘Zeh Keili v’anvayhu. This is my G-d and I shall glorify Him.’ Glorify Him with mitzvos. Make a beautiful sukkah, buy a beautiful lulav, nice tzitzis, etc.”
One chasid said, “I know a mitzvah that can be fulfilled for free!”
The Rov said, “Let’s hear. What is it?”
The chasid answered, “Destroying Amalek. If one remembers every day that he must wipe out Amalek, he fulfills this mitzvah, without spending any money.”
The Rov lifted his head and said, “On the contrary, for a person to have the presence of mind that is necessary to think about destroying Amalek every day, he needs to have all his needs taken care of!”
