The Illumination of the “Sefarim Hakedoshim”

In addition, even though all the sefarim are necessary to the world, nonetheless, some of them have more ruach hakodesh than others. There are certain sefarim that can awaken within us true yiras Shamayim. They can give us incredible encouragement in avodas Hashem and completely change our lives. Thus, even though it is good to learn the sefarim of questions and answers in the obscure details of halachah, as well as the later commentaries on the Gemarra, nonetheless, at the end of the day, the most important thing is the sefarim that inspire us to do teshuvah. It is for this reason that Reb Nosson says that a person should learn a lot of sifrei yirah and chassidus.

This is the meaning of what it says in this sichah: “In This World, it is good for a person to look over and go through all of the sefarim hakedoshim and to learn all of them in order to be in every place [in the Torah].”

While all the sefarim are very holy, when Rebbe Nachman uses the term “sefarim hakedoshim,” he refers to the sefarim of Kabbalah, chassidus, and yiras Shamayim that can wake up our minds to think about Hashem in every aspect of our lives. When we learn these sefarim, we not only gain new concepts in avodas Hashem, rather it is possible for us to experience a deeper level of love and awe of Hashem. They change the way that we see the world and inspire our hearts to actually get up and live a better life.

Thus, even if we don’t remember all of the details of these sefarim in the end, nonetheless, the imprint of the spiritual awakening that we received from them stays with us forever. The feeling that we had when we studied these sefarim is something that we can tap into at all times to find a wellspring of self-renewal and motivation to return to Hashem even many years afterwards.
