Revealed in Trembling

The Way of Emunah | March 22, 2026

Sefer Kobetz Eliyahu (written by Rav Eliyahu Chaim Sternberg zt”l ) relates that one of the chasidim of the Kobriner Rebbe zy”a once happened to spend Pesach by the court of the Husyatiner Rebbe zy”a. This man was used to spending the Pesach season with the Kobriner Rebbe and taking part in drawing the mayim shelanu and all of the other many preparations for the night of the Seder. He expected to see all of the same things in Husyatin. However, he was very disappointed to see that the Rebbe did not make a public display of drawing the mayim shelanu or of any of the other preparations for the Seder.

The chasid was very upset that he had missed the Pesach preparations in Korbin. However, he still hoped to see something amazing by the Seder. He arrived early, even well before the Rebbe came sat down by the table, and saw how the Gabbaim were setting up the room. He saw them standing for a full hour, debating where to place the nice goblets. One said to put them on one side of the plate, while the other to put them on the other side. This caused him much anguish. He wondered why they were so busy with such unimportant things.

After the room and table were finally set up, the Husyatiner Rebbe entered the room and the first cup of wine was poured. When the Rebbe picked up the cup to recite Kiddush, his entire body began to tremble. This caused the table to shake so strongly that all of the plates, silverware and cups that the Gabbaim had so carefully arranged fell to the ground. As the Rebbe said Kiddush, his trembling grew stronger. It got so powerful that the chasid began to tremble in fear himself. He thought: “Oh! For this sight alone, it was worthwhile to stay here for Pesach!”
