Maaleh Yeterah
The concept of “Maaleh Yeterah” refers to the extra spiritual quality or elevation that the Jewish people receive, particularly on Shabbos. The Gemara in Beitzah (16a) teaches that every Jew is given a “neshamah yeterah”—an additional soul—on Shabbos, which departs at its conclusion. This extra soul enables a person to experience greater spiritual pleasure and connection during the holy day.
This special gift is reflected in the unique atmosphere of Shabbos, where the mundane is set aside and the focus shifts to spiritual pursuits. The “neshamah yeterah” allows for deeper enjoyment of Torah study, prayer, and the company of family and friends.
Practical Implications
With the arrival of Shabbos, a Jew is uplifted and given the capacity to rise above the weekday concerns. This elevation is not only spiritual but also manifests in the physical world, as the enjoyment of food, rest, and song is heightened.
When Shabbos ends, the loss of the “neshamah yeterah” is felt, which is why we smell spices during Havdalah—to comfort the soul for the loss of this extra spiritual dimension.
Living with Maaleh Yeterah
Recognizing the gift of “Maaleh Yeterah” inspires us to make the most of Shabbos, dedicating ourselves to spiritual growth and connection. It is a reminder that Hashem bestows upon us unique opportunities for holiness and joy each week.
