The revered Chafetz Chaim zt”l told of an incident that once occurred in his time:
In the city of Berlin, the capital of Germany, lived a devout and upright Jewish man who, besides being a learned talmid chacham owned a large bank with branches throughout Germany and beyond. He had five large branches in Berlin itself.
One morning, when he opened the main bank, he found, to his astonishment, that the safe was empty! The almost impregnable safe usually contained gold bars, diamonds, rare pearls, and considerable cash, and the thieves knew exactly what they were looking for. In total, the contents of that safe amounted to tens of millions!
The banker’s shock was immense. How did the thieves penetrate his most fortified bank and crack open a safe secured with mighty steel bolts? How did they open the mighty locks with keys entrusted to a few trusted individuals? Obviously, these were experienced and skilled bank robbers who had thoroughly. The bewildered bank manager attempted to unveil the robbers’ identity with his own security men but to no avail. This forced him to involve the Berlin police, who arrived promptly with officers and a reinforced detective unit. The officers collected all the evidence and data from the crime scene, gathered testimonies, conducted investigations, and promised to investigate.
