A Relative Has a Special Place by A Yid

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

Yaakov Avinu rubs in twice that Yehuda will be loved and appreciated by his brothers as their Melech. Perhaps it’s because Yehuda recognized the importance of a brother when he said twice about Yosef: מַה בֶּצַע כִי נַהֲרֹג אֶּת אָחִינוּ לז כו What will we gain by killing our “brother”, and: אָחִינוּ בְשָרֵּנוּ הוּא לז כז he is our brother and flesh; whereas Reuven just said: לֹא נַכֶּנוּ נָפֶּש לז כא let’s not kill him. Yehuda appealed to the importance of feeling for a brother. And Yaakov especially appreciated this quality when he said: הַצִילֵּנִי נָא מִיַד אָחִי מִיַד עֵּשָו וישלח לב יב Save me, please, from my brother, Eisav, and Rashi says that Yaakov complained that he isn’t treated like a brother by Eisav.

This is a cardinal issue in a Yid’s life, to be a true brother and take relatives seriously, since it’s straight from Hashem that you be related Davka to certain people. And even when they can be difficult to deal with, it’s important to accept Ratzon Hashem and to be M'chabed them. In Brisk and in Hungary and by R' Chaim Shmuelevitz Zatzal, it was of utmost importance going to their Chasuna's, etc. A Karov (relative) has a special place by a Yid.

And a relative is a: בִ נְ יָ ן אַ ב model for dealing with strangers, as if they were brothers, like Yaakov said: אַחַי מֵּאַיִן אַתֶּם כט ד “My brothers” to perfect strangers. Avrohom Avinu said to Lot: אֲנָשִ ים אַחִים אֲנָחְנוּ יג ח We are brothers. Every Yid should be viewed with warmth and love; even Bnei Eisav we insist in viewing them as brothers and act accordingly, like it says: לֹא תְתַעֵּב אֲדֹמִי כִי אָחִיךָ הוּא תצא כג ח Do not reject the Edomi, since he is your brother; we don’t take N'kama. Even though your brother doesn’t act like a brother, YOU DO!
