In recent years we have experienced several events that have undermined the world’s stability. Prior to these events we may have said that we trust in Hashem but subconsciously we felt that we could rely on our money, doctors, leadership, army, security, cybersecurity etc.
Covid – 19
The COVID-19 crisis put pay to that. Suddenly doctors and scientists were stumped - no one knew what to do. The word came to a standstill, the healthcare system crashed, businesses stopped, schools closed, and illness and death were rampant. We hoped that herd immunity would be our salvation but that also turned out to be a myth. We waited anxiously for the vaccine but when that finally arrived it also ultimately failed. So we waited for the booster and then the booster for the booster until we began to realize that we are entirely in the hands of Hashem.
The Economy
What about our money and food supply that we were so confident in? Well, it did not take long for two distant countries, Russia and Ukraine, to start a senseless war, sending the entire world into financial chaos. Grain and oil shot up in price and inflation began spiralling out of control. The big wig bankers and economists began raising interest rates, putting the world into recession and pushing the poor into deeper poverty. No one has a solution which works. Again we realise that ein lanu al mi l’hisha’en ella al Avinu she’baShamaim.
Political Leadership
What about the reliable leadership that would help us through these difficult times? It wasn’t long before we saw that “penei ha’dor k’p’nei ha’kelev”. In America, the greatest democracy, two competing leaders are completely unprincipled - they simply act with political motives, looking back towards their “handlers” - the voters. And in Eretz Yisrael, a supposed democracy, was mired in political crisis because of leaders who do not care about principles or people but about themselves and are willing to destroy the country for the sake of their own honor and acclaim.
