The Sefas Emes zy”a (5634) writes that on Chanukah, the gates of yiras shomayim are opened for every Jew. The reason we are given a mitzvah to kindle lights is to symbolize that once the gates of yiras shomayim are open, we are able to receive the light of Torah.
