Overcoming Horrific Nisyonos Makes a Person Malchus Material

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

Rashi mentions that both Yaakov and Yosef had brothers who hated them and wanted to kill them. Similarly, Dovid was told by his family to be a shepherd in a lion and bear infested area in order to kill him. This is all Hashgacha Pratis, since overcoming such Nisyonos makes a person: רָ אוּי לְׁ מַ לְׁ כוּת Malchus material.

The end of Parshas Vayishlach has the names of Eisav’s kings who are called: אַלוּפֵי אֱדוֹם Alufei Edom, and RSRH Zatzal explains that אַלוּפֵי אֱדוֹם “Alufei” Edom are a type of Malchus. They are not giving people and caring people. Unlike a Melech Yisroel whom the Rambam calls: םעָ ב הָ לֵ the heart of the entire nation. They have a heart and feelings. Like Yehuda, who saved Yosef. And he saved him by saying: אָחִּ ינוּ בְׁ שָ רֵ נוּ הוּא לז כז he is our brother and flesh, i.e., full of love and warmth. This is exactly Malchus, since the Melech is the: לֵ ב הָ עָ ם a heart!

People who are “full” and content in their own lives can truly love others and care for them. Eisav had just said: יֶׁש לִּ י רָ ב וישלח לג ט I have plenty, and Yaakov said: יֶׁש לִּ י כֹל וישלח לג יא I have EVERYTHING. The true Melech is a: יֶׁש לִּ י כֹל וישלח לג יא I have EVERYTHING person, because a: יֶׁש לִּ י רָ ב וישלח לג ט “I have plenty” is bound to complain for the areas that he feels he’s missing in life. Yaakov had terrible pecklach; an Eisav and a Lavan, who are out to destroy him. And Lavan tried to uproot us entirely.

Yet, Yaakov is total (כֹ ל) happy. Why did Dovid HaMelech have so many inhuman Tzaros and enemies from all sides? Because a true Melech sings despite all his pecklach. אִּ ם חֶׁסֶׁ ד אָשִּ ירָ ה, אִּ ם מִּ שְׁ פָט אָשִּ ירָ ה ברכות ס ב whether You give me Chesed, I will sing, or retribution I will sing. ה' רֹעִּ י לֹא אֶׁחְׁ סָ ר תהלים כג א “I’m not missing anything I’m full!” Similarly, we have Ahron, the Cohen Gadol, who was happy with his brother’s outdoing him (Chazal) since he was “full”, which is symbolized by: אַבְׁ נֵי מִ לּוּאִ ים Avnei Milu'im
