What animal has 14,000 teeth?
There are over 60,000 species of snails worldwide, found in environments from deserts to deep oceans. The smallest species is so tiny that five of them can fit on a grain of sand. The largest snail can grow up to 30 inches long. Snails are mostly active at night, and during times of high humidity. To help them survive in harsh conditions, they are able to hibernate for up to three years.
Snails have many bizarre but useful tools for survival. They produce a special slime that helps them move smoothly over surfaces and stay hydrated. Some have shells covered in hair, and most have a radula, which is like a tongue covered with thousands of tiny teeth. Depending on the species, a snail can have between 1,000 to 14,000 teeth.
