The Shabbos before Purim we read Parshas Zachor, which commands us to recall what the nation of Amalek did to us when we left Egypt.
The commentaries discuss how none of the typical reasons for warfare or hatred were a factor when Amalek attacked us. We were not in their land, nor were we particularly strong so they could earn battle glory. It wasn’t a jihad and they attacked the weakest of our people like cowards. Why do we remember this affront so much?
When Amalek attacked us, we were able to recognize that we had done nothing to them to warrant the attack. Rather, they were sent by G-d because we were lazy in Torah Study (the Sages said it, not me.) The goal, therefore, is to remember not to look at things at face value, but to see what G-d wants of us. Ask yourself, what are some things that make some people wonder if there’s a G-d and others wonder how you could miss Him?
