The Danger of Inferiority and Looking Down at Yourself

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

Again and again, Haman is called: הָ א גָגִ י “The Agagi”. Perhaps this is to be M'ramez why Mordechai and Esther were so tough with Haman; i.e., in order to be: מְ תַ קֵ ן repair the weakness of the ancestor Shaul, about whom it says: וַיַחְ מֹל שָ אוּל וְהָ עָ ם עַ ל א גָג ש"א טו ט he had compassion on “Agag”. Mordechai and Esther were Zoche to Malchus because of their tough stand against Haman, while Shaul lost his Malchus because of his compassion on Agag. Shaul’s Malchus was given to: לְ רֵ ע ךָ הַ טּוֹב מִ מֶ ךָ ש"א טו כח “his friend, who was better than him”, which was Dovid.

When a person doesn’t do what he’s supposed to do, then someone else gets the reward that was really coming to him. Like the Gemara says that: חֵ לְ קוֹ וְחֵ לֶ ק ח בֵ רוֹ נוֹטֵ לצַ דִ יק בְ ּגַן עֶ דֶ ן the Tzadik who learns Torah gets the Schar of the: נִ לָ טְ בַ ים timewasters who could have been like him. Yet, in the end, Hashem repaid Shaul for what he lost, and Vashti’s crown was given to: לִ רְ עוּתָ הּ הַ טּוֹבָ ה מִ מֶ נָּה אסתר א יט “someone better than her”. Chazal point out that these are the same words used when Shaul lost his crown, which was now being returned to his granddaughter, Esther, when she took away Vashti’s crown.

Shaul was given an opportunity to be strong and wipe out Amalek, and twice he showed a weakness; when he had Rachmanus on Agag and the: מֵ יטַ ב הַ צ ֹאן first-rate sheep, and when he was too much of a Tzaddik by comparing: חִ מְ יַקלֵ מָ ית עַ “the extermination of Amalek” to Egla Arufa, where the Torah shows so much concern for one dead person; and now he’s killing loads of innocent women and children. (Chazal).

In the end we have a Hitler, Y'mach Sh'mo, saying: “Deutschland Ibber Alles” (Germany above all!). When you are supposed to be on top, do your job: קֶׁ וֹתל הַ כָ בְ ף full-force, or else the enemy will be on top, Rachmana Litzlan. How dangerous is Anava P'sula misplaced humility and not standing up for your rights, or shying away from responsibility!

וּלְ אֹ ם מִ לְ אֹ ם יֶאֱ מָ ץ תולדות כה כג When one nation falls, the other will rise (i.e., Eisav and Yaakov). Step in and take over, without all those feelings of inferiority dominating your life, and causing a lowlife to become in charge! Similarly, we have a beautiful Shmuess from R' Yerucham Levovitz Zatzal about: צַ דִ יק מָ ט לִ פְ נֵי רָ שָ ע משלי כה כו a Tzadik who cowers before a Rasha; when Yaakov bowed down to Eisav, he caused many generations of Edom dominance, Rachmana Litzlan.

R' Yerucham Levovitz Zatzal says that when you look down at yourself, then others agree and consider you lower, and you lose! He adds how important it is not to feel inferior to the people you see in the streets.
