The Ohr HaChaim says that since Kalev had a big Yetzer Hara and he overcame it, therefore he is greater than Yehoshua. Notice how Yaakov is always fighting and struggling with a Malach, and with getting the Brachos and the Bechora. This can also symbolize how the power of learning Torah overcomes all kinds of Yetzer Hara’s.

Notice how Yaakov’s Hasmada is extreme; 14 years without sleep, and his hard work is extreme: הָ יִּיתִּ י בַ יוֹם אֲ כָלַ נִּ י חֹ רֶּ ב וְקֶּ רַ ח בַ לָ יְלָ ה וַתִּ דַ ד שְ נָתִּ י מֵ עֵ ינָי לא מ through scorching and freezing weather, and no sleeping.
