If It’s Important, He’ll Call Back

We learn this from the way people behave—and if it works this way among people, we can assume that the Ribbono shel Olam will conduct Himself similarly with us. The Ribbono shel Olam behaves with us in a very simple manner.

A prominent askan once told me that he deals with many different communal concerns and endeavors. Since many people approach him for assistance, and it’s impossible to help everyone, he came up with the following arrangement: When someone calls him, he always says, “Call me later, or tomorrow at 4:00.”

If the person calls him at the appointed time, he knows that the matter is important. Sometimes he’s still busy, and he tells the man to call him the following day. If he does, he can surely know that the issue is critically important, and everything must be done to help him. He must choose this case from among the others, because it’s obviously more important.
