Moshe Rabbeinu’s Final Day and the Value of Life

מעם לועז (בשם מדרש פטירת משה, דברים חלק ד, עמ' תתתרג, תחנוני משה) וכשהגיע יומו של מרע"ה ליפטר מן העולם, אמר לו הקב"ה הן קרבו ימיך למות, אמר לפניו, רבש"ע, אחר כל היגיעה שיגעתי תאמר לי שאמות, לא אמות כי אחיה וגו', א"ל הקב"ה, רב לך, עד פה תבוא ולא תוסיף, קרא את יהושע ואצונו, אמר לפניו, רבש"ע, מפני מה אני מת, אם בשביל כבודו של יהושע, יכנס וכו'. ...לזה אמר ה' אל קים אתה החלות להראות לי גבורתך בסנה, ועתה בזקנותי אני מבקש רחמים על עמך צאן מרעיתך שתסלח ותכפר להם.

...Look at the stark difference between Iyov and Moshe Rabeinu. The Me’am Lo’ez brings a Medrash that tells the story of how Moshe reacted to his last day on earth. He “raised the roof” not to die. He ran to Yehoshua and to each Shevet separately and reminded them of all the goodness and Savlanus (patience) he had for them. Even the: ס"מ Satan was afraid of Moshe.

Moshe Rabeinu Loved Life! He Appreciated the Fact That Hashem Created Him

Moshe cried and screamed. He wanted to go against the Tevah (nature) of the: ב ר יא ה world that a person has to die! Look how Moshe loved life! How he appreciated the fact that Hashem created him. Look at this Chazal, and you’ll see how much Moshe appreciated himself, and how he considered himself to be the most special person in the whole world! And how he felt that he deserved special treatment to live forever! (And this is the Anav Mi'kol Adam??!) It is fitting that such a person should be Zoche to the greatest Shira in the world, which every Yid has to say every day: א ז י ש יר מֹּ שֶ ה “Then Moshe sang”! The person who screamed: חַי ו קַי ם (an uproar) that he should go against the Tevah and continue living forever, was the same person who did Kriyas Yam Suf and all the other Mof’sim (miracles).

We see that by Moshe, a Mofes (miracle) wasn’t unusual. And he asked for more and more. וּב חַר ת בַחַי ים נצבים ל יט Chose life! The Torah wants us to choose life, and not Jihad, Chas V’shalom, or Kamikaze Japs, who kill themselves as easily as the drop of a feather. What did the Nazis do when things went wrong? Take a cyanide pill and kill himself. Why not? וַי בֹא עֲמ לֵּק יז ח The episode of Amalek is at the end of this week’s Parsha. They are experts at being M'vatel, and not respecting all that is holy.
