Tisha B’Av Shacharis and Minchah Procedures

Shacharis

It is customary to give extra tzedakah on a fast day. Some have the custom of giving to tzedakah the amount of money they would have used on food today.

Korbanos is said as usual, omitting the parts that are not said on days we don’t say Tachanun. We do not don tallis and tefillin.

Don’t hold and kiss the tzitzis by Boruch She’amar and Shema.

The chazzan recites Aneinu during chazaras hashatz as a separate berachah between Goel Yisroel and Refa’einu. The chazzan omits Birchas Kohanim.

Shemoneh Esrei is followed by Chatzi Kaddish and krias hatorah. Three aliyos are read in Parshas Va’eschanan (4:25–40). This is followed by Chatzi Kaddish. The third oleh reads the haftorah (Yirmiyahu 8:13–9:23), and the Sefer Torah is returned to the aron.

Krias hatorah is followed by kinos. After finishing kinos, say Ashrei and Uva Letzion, omitting the possuk of Va’ani zos brisi. This is followed by Kaddish Shalem (omitting the segment of tiskabel) and Aleinu. Eichah is then recited by each person individually.

After chatzos, you may sit on a chair as usual. (If saying kinos after chatzos, continue sitting on a low object until you are finished.)

Minchah

Before Minchah, the paroches is replaced on the aron kodesh.

We don tallis and Rashi’s tefillin (saying the relevant berachos) and recite the three parshiyos of krias shema. (Unmarried men make a berachah on their tallis katan.) We then say Shir Shel Yom, Ein Keilokeinu, and the daily shiur of Tehillim (and any other shiur usually studied after Shacharis).

The shiurim of Chumash and Tanya from Chitas may also be studied now, as well as the daily shiur in inyanei beis habechirah. The shiur of Rambam, however, should be studied after havdalah tonight.

We then daven Minchah (while still wearing tallis and Rashi’s tefillin). After Ashrei and before Shemoneh Esrei, we read Vayechal in the Torah, as on all other fast days, followed by the haftorah of Dirshu Hashem Behimatz’o.

As indicated in the Siddur, we add Nacheim in Velirushalayim and Aneinu in Shema Koleinu. (See below, “Hosafos,” for what to do if you forgot to say one of these additions.)

The chazzan says Aneinu as a separate berachah between Goel Yisroel and Refa’einu, and Nacheim in Velirushalayim. He also recites Birchas Kohanim.

Chazaras hashatz is followed by Kaddish Shalem and Aleinu.

After Minchah, we remove Rashi’s tefillin and don Rabbeinu Tam’s tefillin.
