Cardinal Numbers

Rebbe Responsa | June 27, 2025

By the Grace of G-d
In the Days of Sefirah, 5739. Brooklyn, N.Y.
Rabbi Chaim Yehuda Jacobs

Greeting and Blessing:

This is to acknowledge receipt of your correspondence, and may G-d grant the fulfillment of your heart's desires for good.

Apropos of the present days of Sefira, I wish to reiterate a point which I have had occasions to mention before, which is particularly instructive.

As you surely know, the text of the Counting of the Omer is in the form of cardinal numbers, and not ordinal, as, for example, "Today are two days of the Omer," (instead of "Today is the second day of the Omer"). The instruction contained in this is that in all matters of Yiddishkeit, goodness and holiness - that what was accomplished the day before not only remains today, to be added to the accomplishments of today, but much more. When we say, "Today are two days of the Omer," it means that we not only have the sum total of both days, but more than that. For, as our Sages remind us, the weight lifted by two persons in a joint effort, is greater than the sum total of the weight which these individuals could have lifted individually.

May G-d grant that this should be so in your case, in advancing from strength to strength in all matters of goodness and holiness, Torah and Mitzvoth.

With blessing
M. Schneerson

P.S. Many thanks for the enclosures and the report of activities. I will remember each and all of you in prayer, as requested. I have written the above letter in English, in order that you may make use of it also for the benefit of those who are not familiar with Hebrew or Yiddish.
