Hashem decided to severely punish קרח, דתן ואבירם and all those who joined their rebellion against משה, by having the ground swallow them up alive.

He told משה to ______ everyone else to move away from the area around the dwellings of קרח, דתן ואבירם, so they wouldn’t suffer the same punishment.

The תורה tells us that משה went to talk to the people, and the זקני ישראל went after him.

Question

Since Hashem sent ____ to go and warn the people, why did the ________ go along with him?

Answer

At this point, משה couldn’t go and talk to דתן ואבירם directly and try to get them to do תשובה, because Hashem had instructed him to go and warn the other people to move aside.

He could not delay that mission by going to talk to דתן ואבירם.

Yet, because of his tremendous ______ for every Yid, משה hoped that he might still inspire them, at least in an indirect way.

So rather than go alone to warn the people, משה was escorted by the זקני ישראל.

משה hoped that when דתן ואבירם saw him walking with a distinguished entourage, it might awaken some respect within them, and cause them to correct their ways.

Life Lesson

We must learn from משה’s example, and never give up on another Yid.

Rather we must do what we can to help them and bring them _________ to Hashem.

Further Discussion

What is the “key” to the Rebbe’s explanation in this שיחה? (See אות ד in the שיחה)
