החי' הרי"מ זי"ע אמר שבימים הראשונים היו מסגפים עצמם בסיגופים בחודש אלול והר"ר אלימלך זי"ע הי' אומר שהוא הי' בוקע השמים שלא נצטרך לסיגופים ואמר וכי הי' כונת הרה"ק שהי' בוקע השמים שיוכל לכנוס מגושם לעבודה חלילה. רק שהיו הצדיקים פועלים בקדושתם ומעש"ט שלהם שהי' בוקע שיהא נפתח שפע הקדושה שיוכל לבא להתפשטות הגשמיות בלא הסיגופים וזה טוב ומיופה ביותר מכאשר בא ע"י סיגופים: ספר שיח שרפי קודש
The Chidushei Harim ZY”A said, that in the early days they would torture themselves with Sigufim (tortures) in the month of Elul, and the Rebbe Reb Elimelech [of Lizhensk] ZY”A would say that he split the Heavens that one shall not need to do Sigufim. And he (the Chidushei Harim) said, “Was it the intention that one should enter in a mundane state to Avodas Hashem, Choliloh”? rather that the Tzadikim accomplished with their Kedusha and Ma’asim Tovim (Holiness and good deeds), that one can reach the heights of Kedusha and be non-mundane without Sigufim. And this is better and optimal than through Sigufim.
