On the Parsha:
וַיְה ִ֥י כָל-הָאָָ֖רֶץ שָפָָ֣ה אֶחָָ֑ת וּדְבָר ָ֖ים אֲחָד ִֽים: (י"א א')
("And it was that the entire land was one language and of united matters." 11:1)
The Ohr haChaim haKadosh z"l discusses here at length exactly what was the story with the people of the "Tower of Babylon", and why Hashem scattered them. He says that it would appear from the verses that there was no specific great "sin" that was committed here (Though our Sages do expound that there were negative motivations here, and Rebbi Moshe Dovid Valli z"l, student of the Ramchal z"l, actually explains that this was all the wicked Nimrod's doing, who wanted to create a rebellion against Hashem, symbolized by a "cross", which represents the Tower (vertical line) and the City (horizontal line) of Babylon, and on a deeper level, a separation (horizontal line) of Heaven and Earth (vertical line), of "keeping Hashem out" of the world, G-d forbid.), rather they simple wanted to all be "together", and rather Hashem had decided to "spread them out", both for their benefit and the benefit of the entire world.
