The Aderes (Rav Eliyahu Dovid Tumim Rabinowitz) zt”l was very careful not to be the source of any trouble for the public. One day, a tragedy occurred and his young son passed away. Everyone gathered for the funeral but the Rov had locked himself in his room. They waited two full hours until he came out and made the bracha of “dayan ha’emes” and the levaya began.
A while later, his students asked him why he made everyone wait for two hours before starting the funeral. He answered, “Chazal say that a person is obligated to bless Hashem for the bad just like one blesses Him for the good. I recalled the great joy I felt when my son was born and I made the bracha of Shehechiyanu at his bris. Therefore, I remained in my room until I felt ready to say the bracha of ‘dayan ha’emes’ with the same amount of joy that I had when I made the bracha of Shehechiyanu.”
