Talmud In Verse

Mosaic Express | June 27, 2025

By Justice Michel M. J. Shore

Makkot follows Tractate Sanhedrin,
Related criminal matters that teach
Of false witnesses, exile and punishment
To conclude with the lessons of the courts.

False witnesses lead to dismissal of cases,
Or even punishment for the incrimination
Of intended suspects to a crime,
Never committed for which they are accused.

Two witnesses are always required
To condemn in judgment a felon.
The accused must also have been forewarned,
That the act is forbidden, punished by law.

Rehabilitation not incarceration
Seeks to bring repentance and redemption.
