The Power of Shema and the Day of Purim

Torah Papers | June 27, 2025

–And the house of Yaakov will be a fire, and the house of Yosef a flame, and the house of Eisav straw. How do we prevail over the house of Eisav?! Through Shema – reciting Shema!

We will add just one more point and conclude with this. Bnei Ashkenaz upon completing the Megillah reading recite the song:

שׁ וֹשׁ ַנַּת יַעֲקֹב צָהֲלָה וְשָׂמֵחָה בִּרְאוֹתָם יַחַד תְּכֵלֶת מָרְדְּ כָי. How does Yaakov come into this?! Based on what we said, the answer is simple. It is because the strength to overcome Haman was due to שׁ ְ מ ַ ע י ִ ש ׂ ְ רָ א ֵ ל, and therefore it says, "The rose of Yaakov rejoiced and was glad!”

We arrive at the day of Purim, a day whose merit is greater than even Yom Kippur, for whoever extends a hand – they give to him (כָּל הַפּוֹשׁ ֵט יָד נוֹתְנִים לוֹ). The problem is that the day of Purim is very busy – we have the reading of the Megillah, the Purim feast, and Mishloach Manot. Thus, to make the most of this day, one must start it from the night before; not go to sleep at 12 and wake up at 7; but rather, wake up at 3am and recite the entire book of Tehillim. Then go to the mikveh, and from there to the Vatikin, reading of the Megillah – and by 7 in the morning you’re already home; by noon, you’ve already finished the entire Mishnayot of Megillah. May Hakadosh Baruch Hu grant us the merit to utilize this day as we should, may our Tefillot be accepted favorably, and may we merit the complete redemption speedily in our days!!!
